  17.      WELCOME TO BOOKBANK!
  18.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  19.      BookBank is the program to help you manage your book
  20.      collection.  Not a program, THE program.  I am so sure of this
  21.      that I want you try the program before you pay for it.  This
  22.      evaluation version of the program is not limited in any way. 
  23.      It is fully functional and extremely powerful.

  25.      Many years of experience in both the book business and the
  26.      computer programming arena that have gone in to producing
  27.      a program that is not only easy to learn and use, but
  28.      does what you need.
  29.  
  30.      Knowing what you have, who you have loaned books to, and
  31.      what you need will enable you to get the most out of your
  32.      collection, whether that collection is for enjoyment or
  33.      investment.  You will be amazed at how quick and easy it
  34.      all is!

  36.      BookBank will enable you to spend less time with all the
  37.      record keeping of book collecting.  This will enable you spend
  38.      more time doing what you really enjoy -- collecting books!

  41.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  42.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  43.      The following are the minimum hardware requirements to run
  44.      BookBank:
  45.  
  46.          An IBM PC compatible computer with at least 512K free RAM
  47.           (random access memory) running DOS version 3.0 or later.
  48.  
  49.          At least 1 floppy drive and a hard drive. 
  50.  
  51.          Any monochrome or color monitor.
  52.  
  53.          A printer is necessary for producing reports, invoices,
  54.           orders, etc...

  57.      INSTALLATION
  58.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  59.      To install BookBank, all you need to do is change to the
  60.      drive and directory in which you put the BookBank files and type
  61.      "INSTALL".  For example, if you put the evaluation disk in drive
  62.      A:, you would type:
  63.             A:           then press Enter
  64.             INSTALL      then press Enter
  65.  
  66.      When the installation program begins running, you will see a
  67.      menu where you can read many of the documentation files. While
  68.      reading the information, you can get help by pressing F1 or
  69.      print the file by pressing F2.  You can get out of the text
  70.      reading screen by pressing Esc.
  71.  
  72.      To begin the installation, select "Install BookBank".
  73.  
  74.      You will be asked for the directory where you want the program
  75.      installed.  The default name is "C:\BOOKBANK." If want to choose a
  76.      different name, just type it and press Enter.
  77.  
  78.      Next, BookBank and all of its files will be extracted from the
  79.      archive and copied into that directory.
  80.  
  81.      When the files have been extracted and copied, you will be asked
  82.      if your CONFIG.SYS file should be checked.  This is done because
  83.      the lines "BUFFERS=20" and "FILES=30" must be in your CONFIG.SYS
  84.      file.  If you do not have the installation program check these,
  85.      make sure that you check that the CONFIG.SYS file is set up
  86.      properly.  The program may not run if this is not done.
  87.  
  88.      Now your installation is done!  Remember, if your CONFIG.SYS
  89.      file was changed, you will need to restart your computer so that
  90.      the changes can take affect.

  92.      At this point, you can start using the program!

  95.      STARTING THE PROGRAM
  96.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  97.      To start BookBank from DOS, simply type BOOKBANK and press
  98.      Enter from the disk and directory in which the program
  99.      resides.  If you followed the installation procedure as
  100.      described above, and installed the program to the C: drive,
  101.      the following command sequence will always work to start the
  102.      program:

  105.           cd\bookbank
  106.           bookbank
  107.  
  108.      After a short wait a screen will appear that tells you that
  109.      this is an evaluation copy of the program.  After you have
  110.      read this screen, press any key and the title screen will pop
  111.      up, and then shortly thereafter the Main Menu will appear.

  113.      When you start the program for the first time, you will be
  114.      asked if you want to create the index files.  Answer this
  115.      question by pressing the Y key.  If you press N,  you will be
  116.      taken back to DOS since the index files are a must to run the
  117.      program.  When indexing process finishes, you will be at
  118.      BookBank's Main Menu.

  121.      EXITING THE PROGRAM
  122.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  123.      You should always exit BookBank through the Quit command from
  124.      the Main Menu.  As the program shuts down it updates some
  125.      important files and indexes.  If you do not exit this way
  126.      some of your valuable data may be lost or damaged.

  129.      HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
  130.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  131.      BookBank is divided into five basic sections. Each section
  132.      is available from the main menu.  Each section handles a
  133.      different type of task.  The sections are as follows:

  135.      The first allows helps you to manage your books and is
  136.      where you add, edit, delete, and loan your books.
  137.  
  138.      The second section keeps track of contacts and the things
  139.      relating to those contacts. 
  140.  
  141.      The third section is to keep track of wanted items and to
  142.      produce want-lists.
  143.  
  144.      The fourth section is for generating reports on your books
  145.      and contacts.
  146.  
  147.      The fifth section is for setup is where your profile is
  148.      recorded and certain other "vital statistics" can be set
  149.      and modified.

  151.      As stated before, each of these sections corresponds to a
  152.      selection from the main menu and each section has its own
  153.      sub-menu where you choose specific operations.  You choose a
  154.      selection by either pressing the key that corresponds to the
  155.      letter of the choice or by using the cursor keys to scroll
  156.      through the list of choices and then pressing the Enter key
  157.      when the correct choice is highlighted.  The last selection
  158.      available from this Main Menu exits the program.

  161.      THE MANUAL
  162.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  163.      When the BookBank program was installed, a document named
  164.      "BOOKBANK.DOC" was copied into the same directory as the
  165.      program.  This is the evaluation version of the reference
  166.      manual for the program.  You can print out this manual by
  167.      typing the following from the drive and directory where you
  168.      installed BookBank:

  172.      The manual is in standard ASCII format so it could also be
  173.      loaded into most word processors.  Be aware that the manual
  174.      has a table of contents, a glossary and a section on the most
  175.      frequently asked questions and problems.  A more complex
  176.      manual, professionally printed and indexed, is included with
  177.      registration.

  205.      LICENSE
  206.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  207.      The evaluation version of BookBank is a Shareware program
  208.      and is provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. 
  209.      Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not
  210.      give it away altered or as part of another system.  The
  211.      essence of Shareware software is to provide personal
  212.      computer users with quality software without high prices,
  213.      and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to
  214.      develop new products.  If you find this program useful and
  215.      find that you are using BookBank and continue to use
  216.      BookBank after the 45 day trial period, you must make a
  217.      registration payment of $50 to Michael Carnell.  The $50
  218.      registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  219.      computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just
  220.      like a book.  An example is that this software may be used
  221.      by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
  222.      computer location to another, so long as there is no
  223.      possibility of it being used at one location while it's
  224.      being used at another.  Just as a book cannot be read by two
  225.      different persons at the same time neither should a software
  226.      package be used by two people at the same time.

  228.      Commercial users of BookBank must register and pay for
  229.      their copies of BookBank within 45 days of first use or
  230.      their license is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may
  231.      be made by contacting Michael Carnell.

  233.      You are encouraged to pass a copy of the Shareware version
  234.      of BookBank along to your friends for evaluation.  Please
  235.      encourage them to register their copy if they find that they
  236.      can use it.  All registered users will receive a copy of the
  237.      latest version of the BookBank system plus additional
  238.      benefits listed below.

  241.      REGISTRATION AND ORDERING INFORMATION
  242.      -------------------------------------------------------------
  243.      Registering BookBank allows you to legally use the product
  244.      after the trial period.  When you register your copy of
  245.      BookBank you will be sent the full professionally printed
  246.      manual.  The manual includes many examples, tips, a full
  247.      index, reference section, users guide, glossary and much
  248.      more.  In addition registered BookBank users get the
  249.      current copy of BookBank on disk (without the "Press any
  250.      key..." entry screen) along with their own serial number,
  251.      free bug-fixes and minor-updates, mailed notification of
  252.      major BookBank upgrades, and priority when calling for
  253.      BookBank software support (we can guarantee no support to
  254.      unregistered users).  This support is good for as long as
  255.      you are the registered user of the program and Michael
  256.      is still alive and lucid.  There is no expiration on
  257.      support for registered users.  Most importantly, registered
  258.      users know they are helping to make sure that high-quality
  259.      software like BookBank continues to be sold in this
  260.      low-cost way.

  262.      BookBank registration costs $50 US and includes all the
  263.      benefits listed above.  An evaluation disk with the current
  264.      version of BookBank and a condensed manual on it is also
  265.      available for $5 US.  This is to be used only to try out
  266.      BookBank and does not include any of the associated
  267.      benefits of registration (the right to use BookBank after
  268.      the 45 day evaluation period, etc...).  The $5 fee covers
  269.      the cost of diskette(s) and handling.
